The Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce May Business of the Month is Hurst Farm Supply! They are located at 2102 US 82 in Crosbyton, and the phone number is 806-675-2487 or 806-765-8972. They are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. However, during planting and harvesting season, Hurst Farm Supply is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days/week. The Crosbyton store offers parts to service every tractor need, and if they don’t have the part in the store, they will immediately acquire the part for the customer. There has been a store in Crosbyton “forever”, but Hurst Farm Supply took over in 1971. Ready to serve you at the Crosbyton store is Orvin Ellis, store manager, and Tyler Johnson.
Hurst Farm supply had its origin in Lorenzo, TX in 1955, and was started by L.J. “Red” Hurst, with the goal of providing John Deere equipment with excellent customer service to the surrounding areas. Since that time, the company has grown to a 7 store dealership, that employees over 120 people. Crosbyton is one of these seven stores, as well as Abernathy, Lorenzo, Lubbock, Slaton, Snyder, and Colorado City. Joe Hurst, one son of “Red” states, “As we grow, and as technology and equipment changes, we will strive to continue putting our focus on providing excellent customer service and building our relationships with our customers.” Joe is CEO and one of several owners, along with his brother, Terry who serves as Corporate Service Manager. The business is also owned by Craig McDonald, Randy Sparks, Jonathan Hurst, Casey Hurst, Jerred Hurst, Jay Hurst, and Kelly Hurst, all employed by the operation.
Hurst Farm Supply is known as a generous partner to organizations and groups that surround the seven stores. One of the most important areas that the Hurst’s support are youth activities, especially including the local and county stock shows. There hasn’t been a stock show within each of the stores’ area that has not had a Hurst Farm Store representative attending and bidding and financially supporting the kids who have worked so hard with their show animals.
In this age of high technology, it’s easy for companies and individuals to lose focus on what is most important. Therefore, the Hurst’s mission statement states, “We are determined to be a company of High Touch in this age of High Tech.” This means that we recognize that our greatest asset is our customer. We are committed to treating them with courtesy and respect at all times, recognizing that we are selling much more than agriculture products or providing services of repair. We are selling the idea that we are in a partnership with our customers that maximizes their success. WHEN THEY SUCCEED, WE SUCCEED!
Joe Hurst is the Chamber’s direct contact, the one we always call when we need something, so we chose to interview him. Joe, a native of Lorenzo, he is married to Christy and they have two sons, Jerred and wife Jennifer, who have Noah, A.J. and Ella. Second son Jay and wife Kim have Jett, Barrett, and Lincoln. Joe said that he started out teaching agriculture in high school, but felt the call to join his dad after one year of teaching and has never looked back. When asked what Joe likes most about Crosbyton, he replied that it’s the same with all of the seven location where they are located: he loves having the opportunity to work with farmers because they are the most honest people you will ever meet! In response to the question: what would you change about Crosbyton, Joe answered that if he could he would change commodity prices for the farmers and their family. Sadly this is out of his control, but nevertheless this would be a huge help for farmers. Craig McDonald is the person Joe most admires because he is a great man of faith and an excellent business man. The best advice Joe ever received was not only the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, but also “Customers are like sheep, you can sheer them all the time, but can only skin them once.” This advice has encouraged them to keep prices reasonable and taught them to never take advantage of a customer.
